How to Create a Warm and Inviting Space to Enjoy Your Garden
Scotland’s landscapes are breathtaking in every season - from the golden tones of autumn leaves to misty mornings rolling across the hills. But as the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, many of us retreat indoors and miss out on enjoying our gardens until spring returns.
With a glass extension, canopy, or Cero sliding doors from SpaceKube, you don’t have to. Our precision-built glass structures let you embrace the changing seasons while staying warm, comfortable, and connected to the outdoors. Here’s how you can make your garden room the perfect retreat this autumn.
Capture Autumn Light
In Scotland, daylight is precious as the year winds down. SpaceKube glass rooms and extensions are designed to maximise natural light with ultra-strong glass panes and slim aluminium profiles. Even on the darkest days, you can enjoy brighter, airier living spaces that feel connected to nature.
Stay Warm and Cosy
A common question we hear is whether a glass structure can really keep out the chill. The answer is yes! Our solutions are designed for the Scottish climate, with insulated profiles, high-performance glazing, and optional integrated heating systems.
Whether you’re curled up with a book, hosting friends, or working from home, your glass extension or garden room stays inviting, even as the temperature outside drops.
A Space that Adapts to You
One of the joys of a glass room or wintergarden is versatility. In autumn, it might become a family dining room filled with soft lighting and autumn colours, or a quiet place to work while enjoying views of your garden.
With bespoke design options, shading systems, and door choices ranging from slim sliding panels to bi-folding designs, your glass structure will always be tailored to how you live.
Set the Mood with Lighting and Shading
Autumn evenings call for warm, atmospheric lighting. Our garden rooms and extensions can be fitted with integrated lighting solutions to create a welcoming glow long after the sun sets. Optional shading systems also help manage low winter sun, giving you a space that feels comfortable all day long.
Built for Scottish Weather
From brisk winds to heavy rainfall, Scotland’s autumn weather can be unpredictable, but our glass extensions, canopies, and wintergardens are built to last. Precision-engineered frames and toughened glass ensure durability, while minimalist designs add style without compromising strength.
Conclusion
A glass extension, canopy, or garden room is more than just an addition to your home, it’s a way to enjoy the beauty of autumn without the chill. By combining natural light, warmth, and versatile design, SpaceKube helps you create a welcoming space that’s perfect for relaxing, entertaining, or simply soaking up the season’s atmosphere.

First CPD Training Event of 2025: A Great Success in Uphall, West Lothian
Yesterday we held our first CPD training event of 2025, and we’re thrilled to report that it was a fantastic success! The event took place in our showroom in Uphall, West Lothian, and we welcomed a great turnout of architects from Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Dundee. It was a day full of learning, networking, and exploring the latest industry insights, all thanks to our expert hosts and the enthusiastic participation of our attendees.
A Day of Expert Insights
The day kicked off with an insightful CPD session by Danny from Internorm. His session, titled Glazing for the Future, provided a deep dive into the future of glazing technology and how innovations are shaping the way architects design spaces. Danny’s expertise and engaging presentation sparked plenty of questions and lively discussions, leaving everyone with new knowledge about the exciting developments in glazing.
Next up was Chris from Solarlux, who presented To Slide or To Fold. This session explored the benefits and considerations of sliding versus folding doors, helping architects make informed decisions when selecting the right solutions for their projects. Chris provided valuable insights into the functionality, aesthetics, and practicality of these systems, making the decision-making process much clearer for attendees.
Hands-On Exploration in Our Showroom
Following the CPD presentations, the architects had the opportunity to explore the products up close and personal in our showroom. This hands-on experience allowed them to get a real feel for the quality, design, and functionality of the glazing and door systems discussed earlier in the day. It was the perfect way to complement the sessions and reinforce the knowledge shared.
A Big Thank You to Our Hosts and Attendees
A special thank you goes to Danny from Internorm and Chris from Solarlux for delivering such informative and engaging sessions. Their expertise and dedication made the event a success. We also want to extend our gratitude to all the architects who attended the event. Your participation made the day even more special, and the discussions and feedback shared were invaluable.
Looking Ahead to More CPD Events in 2025
This is just the first of four CPD events we’re hosting this year in collaboration with Solarlux and Internorm. If you missed this event, don’t worry – there are still three more opportunities to join us, learn from industry experts, and connect with fellow professionals.

Discover the Unique Advantages of Solarlux Bifold Doors for Your Home
When it comes to enhancing the beauty and functionality of your home, selecting the right doors can make all the difference. Solarlux bifold doors stand out from traditional sliding and French doors, offering a sophisticated solution for your patio, garden, or any space that calls for a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors.
If you’re considering home renovations or extensions, here’s why Solarlux bifold doors should be at the top of your list, offering benefits that other door types simply cannot match.
Why Do Solarlux Bifold Doors Stand Out?
Solarlux is not just another brand in the bifold door industry — they invented the modern bifold door over 40 years ago, and our commitment to innovation, design, and quality has only grown since. Solarlux bifold doors have been continuously refined, ensuring you get the best possible door solution for your project.
What makes Solarlux bifold doors truly exceptional is their ability to combine cutting-edge design with superior functionality. Their doors are engineered with some of the slimmest sightlines on the market, giving you more glass and less visible frame, resulting in better views and an elegant aesthetic.
In addition to their sleek appearance, Solarlux bifold doors are packed with unique features that you won’t find in other bifold options. These include self-cleaning and illuminated tracks, innovative cleaning solutions, and specially designed handles and locks. Beyond aesthetics and functionality, our doors offer unparalleled versatility with multiple track options.
Whether you want the doors to open inwards or outwards, left or right, or even around corners, Solarlux bifold doors provide a bespoke solution tailored to your needs. These features make them an excellent choice for homeowners seeking both beauty and practicality, with solutions for accessibility and a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Why Solarlux Bifold Doors Are the Smart Choice
For more than four decades, Solarlux has been the epitome of premium quality, cutting-edge design, and precision engineering. Their bifold doors help create a flawless connection between your indoor and outdoor environments, with expansive glass panels that open up to nearly 100% of the door’s width. Unlike traditional sliding doors, which still leave a portion of the opening covered by glass even when fully open, Solarlux bifold doors stack neatly to the side, ensuring an uninterrupted view and a seamless blend of your living spaces with your outdoor areas.
Solarlux offers both insulated and non-insulated bifold door options, allowing you to customise your door solution based on your specific needs. With the choice of wood, aluminium, or a combination of both materials, and a wide range of colours and finishes (30 RAL colours as standard, plus dual colour options), there’s no shortage of design possibilities. Plus, for homes in coastal or harsh climates, our aluminium doors can be coated with specialised weather protection to ensure long-lasting durability.
Explore Our Range of Options
Whether you’re looking for thermal insulation or a more open design, Solarlux offers a range of bifold door options that are perfect for any type of project:

Introducing Solarlux Cero: The Ultimate Minimalist Sliding Door System from SpaceKube by EKCO
When it comes to seamless indoor-outdoor living, nothing compares to the Solarlux Cero sliding door system. With its sleek, minimalist design and high-performance features, Cero from SpaceKube by EKCO sets a new standard in luxury glazing.
This architectural glass system combines advanced engineering with modern aesthetics, creating an uninterrupted connection with the outdoors while delivering exceptional security, insulation, and ease of operation.
What is the Solarlux Cero Sliding Door System?
Solarlux Cero is designed to create panoramic views through expansive glass panels with minimal framing, providing maximum transparency with a contemporary, elegant appearance. Engineered and manufactured in Germany, Cero incorporates premium materials and precision technology to offer not only aesthetic appeal but also durability, weather resistance, and user-friendly functionality.
Cero Range: Tailored to Every Architectural Vision
The Solarlux Cero system offers two primary ranges, each catering to different architectural needs:
- Cero II – Designed for maximum transparency, Cero I features double glazing and can accommodate glass panels up to 15m² per panel. Its ultra-slim 34mm vertical sightline allows for expansive, unobstructed views.
- Cero III – Featuring triple glazing for optimal insulation, Cero III offers even greater thermal efficiency. The panels in this range are designed to maintain the slim profile of Cero I, while delivering enhanced thermal performance, making it ideal for colder climates.
Both ranges offer custom configurations to fit unique project needs, allowing for various combinations of fixed, sliding, and corner-less panels that transform spaces into stunning, light-filled environments.
Smooth Operation: Effortless Sliding with Precision Engineering
One of the most impressive aspects of the Cero system is its effortless, smooth sliding operation. Designed to be operated with ease, Cero’s stainless-steel roller mechanism supports heavy glass panels while ensuring smooth, noise-free movement.
Whether opened manually or with an automated system, the Cero Doors are easy to control and secure. Plus, the low-threshold design enhances accessibility while blending seamlessly with flooring, making indoor-outdoor transitions fluid and barrier-free.
Enhanced Security for Peace of Mind
Security is a priority in the Solarlux Cero system. Its robust aluminium profiles and precision-engineered locking mechanisms offer outstanding resistance to forced entry, surpassing the industry standards. The system includes multi-point locking mechanisms and can be enhanced with additional security features, providing homeowners with peace of mind without compromising on style.
Increased Property Value
Investing in a Solarlux glass extension doesn’t just enhance your lifestyle – it adds significant value to your property. Glass extensions are increasingly popular with homebuyers who appreciate their aesthetic appeal, energy efficiency, and low-maintenance quality.
Adding this kind of luxury feature can set your home apart in the market, making it more desirable and potentially raising its resale value. If you’re looking for an investment that combines immediate enjoyment with long-term financial returns, a Solarlux glass extension is an ideal choice.
Exceptional Thermal and Acoustic Insulation
In addition to providing clear views, Cero offers exceptional thermal insulation. The Cero III range, in particular, incorporates triple glazing, achieving industry-leading U-values that contribute to energy efficiency and consistent indoor temperatures year-round. This high level of insulation helps reduce energy consumption, keeping homes warm in winter and cool in summer.
Acoustic insulation is also a standout feature. Solarlux Cero’s glass and aluminium profiles are designed to dampen external noise, allowing homeowners to enjoy tranquillity within their spaces even when situated in busy, urban areas.

Choosing the Solarlux Cero system means investing in an aesthetic and functional upgrade that enhances property value and elevates daily living. Here are the key reasons why Cero stands out:

The Benefits of Sunlight
The Benefits of Sunlight: Embrace the Outdoors All Year Round
Spacekube Blog
Embrace the Outdoors All Year Round with Glass Structures and Canopies
Sunlight is one of nature’s greatest gifts. It not only enhances our mood but also supports our overall health and well-being. In modern living, where we spend much of our time indoors, finding ways to enjoy the benefits of natural light without being exposed to harsh weather conditions is essential.
That's where glass structures and canopies come in, providing the perfect solution to experience the outdoors all year round while staying protected from the elements.

Why Sunlight Matters
Sunlight plays a crucial role in maintaining both physical and mental health. Here’s how:
- Boosts Vitamin D Production: Sunlight is the most natural source of Vitamin D, which helps maintain strong bones and supports the immune system. Even brief exposure to sunlight through glass structures can contribute to daily Vitamin D intake.
- Improves Mental Health: Natural light stimulates the production of serotonin, a hormone that improves mood, reduces stress, and enhances focus. Being surrounded by natural light in a comfortable glass canopy or structure allows you to enjoy these mental health benefits, even during the colder months.
- Regulates Sleep Patterns: Exposure to sunlight helps regulate circadian rhythms, improving sleep quality. Glass structures let natural light flow into your living space, aligning your body’s internal clock with nature.
- Energy Efficiency: Sunlight reduces the need for artificial lighting, which helps lower energy consumption and reduces electricity bills. With glass structures, homes or offices can be flooded with natural light, brightening up spaces while being energy efficient.
Enjoy the Outdoors Year-Round with Glass Structures and Canopies
Our glass structures and canopies are designed to allow homeowners and businesses to experience the outdoors in all seasons. Whether it’s a hot summer day or a chilly winter evening, our products ensure that you stay connected with nature in comfort and style.
Key Benefits of Our Glass Structures:
- Weather Protection: Whether it’s rain, snow, or harsh winds, our glass canopies provide a barrier that lets you enjoy outdoor spaces without being exposed to the elements. Imagine enjoying a rainy afternoon on your patio without getting wet or basking in winter sunlight while staying warm.
- Extended Living Space: A glass structure can transform patios, balconies, or garden areas into functional spaces that can be used year-round. With the protection of a canopy, you can extend your living area and create a cosy, naturally lit spot to relax, dine, or entertain guests.
- Improved Aesthetic Appeal: Glass canopies and structures add an elegant and modern touch to any home or building. Their sleek, transparent design ensures they blend seamlessly with the surroundings while offering an inviting outdoor space.
- Enhanced Comfort and Versatility: Glass canopies provide a comfortable transition between indoors and outdoors. Whether you’re reading, enjoying a family meal, or working, you can enjoy the natural beauty of the outdoors while staying sheltered.
-
Increased Property Value: Investing in glass structures not only enhances your lifestyle but also adds value to your property. They create unique, usable spaces that are attractive to future buyers and can boost the appeal of your home.
Conclusion
Sunlight is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, and glass structures and canopies provide the perfect solution for enjoying it in all its glory. Our products allow you to embrace natural light, improve your living space, and stay connected to the outdoors no matter the season.

Do You Need Planning Permission for a Garden Room
Do You Need Planning Permission for a Garden Room
Spacekube Blog
Planning Permission: A Comprehensive Guide
Modern garden rooms have become a popular addition for homeowners looking to maximise their outdoor space. Whether you envision it as a peaceful workspace, a hobby room, or a relaxing garden retreat, these structures offer endless possibilities. However, before you invest in a garden room, there’s an important question to address: Do you need planning permission for a garden room?
In this article, we’ll break down everything you need to know about garden room planning permission, from the rules and exceptions to building regulations that might apply to your design.
Garden Room Planning Permission: When Is It Required?
The good news is that, in most cases, garden rooms are considered outbuildings and often don’t require planning permission. This is because many garden rooms fall under “permitted development” rights. However, it’s essential to ensure your garden room complies with specific regulations to avoid potential issues later on.
Additionally, not all properties automatically have permitted development rights. To confirm if your property qualifies, it’s a good idea to check with your local planning office. You may not have permitted development rights if:
- You live in a flat or maisonette.
- Your home is a listed building.
- Your property is in a designated area, such as a National Park, conservation area, or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Key Planning Rules for Garden Rooms
If your property does have permitted development rights, your garden room must still comply with specific planning rules to be built without planning permission. These rules are consistent across the UK, including Scotland and England where we operate. Here are the main regulations:
- Location of the Garden Room:
Your garden room must be located behind your property. If you’ve extended your home since moving in, the “front” refers to the original front. - Land Coverage:
The total combined area of all extensions, outbuildings, sheds, and the proposed garden room must not exceed 50% of the total land surrounding your house. - Building Height:
- The structure must be single storey.
- It should be no taller than 3 metres in height, or 4 metres if it has a dual-pitched roof.
- If the garden room is located within 2 metres of your boundary, the height must not exceed 2.5 metres.
- Eaves Height:
The eaves (where the roof meets the walls) should be no more than 2.5 metres above ground level. - Balconies and Verandas:
Your garden room cannot include a balcony, raised platform, or veranda. - Living Accommodation:
The structure cannot be used as self-contained living accommodation. While it can serve many purposes, such as a home office or hobby room, it cannot be designed as a permanent living space without planning permission.
Using Your Garden Room as a Home Office
If you plan to use your garden room as a home office, this will likely be classified as an incidental use under permitted development, meaning its purpose is considered a minor addition to your main property. However, if you intend to run a business from the space or use it as a client meeting area, you may need to apply for planning permission retrospectively.
To clarify whether your intended use qualifies as “incidental,” it’s advisable to consult with your local planning office for specific guidance.
Building Regulations for Garden Rooms
While many garden rooms don’t require planning permission, you’ll also need to consider building regulations. These rules are in place to ensure the safety, structural integrity, and insulation of buildings.
In most cases, garden rooms are exempt from building regulations, as long as they meet the following conditions:
- The structure is not attached to your main home.
- The garden room is not designed for sleeping.
- The floor area is less than 15 square metres.
If your garden room’s floor area is between 15 and 30 square metres, you generally won’t need building regulations approval, but there are a few key considerations:
- The structure must be at least 1 metre away from any property boundary.
- It should be constructed using non-combustible materials.
If you ever plan to use the garden room as a guest bedroom or any kind of accommodation, it must comply with full building regulations, including proper insulation, ventilation, and fire safety measures.
Conclusion
A modern garden room can be a fantastic addition to your home, offering a versatile space for relaxation, work, or hobbies. While many garden rooms don’t require planning permission, it’s crucial to check whether your property has permitted development rights and ensure your garden room complies with the necessary rules and building regulations.
At Spacekube by EKCO, our team specialises in helping homeowners design and build their ideal garden rooms. Whether you need advice on planning permission, building regulations, or design ideas, we’re always here to offer expert guidance. Connecting Your Home to the Outdoors
Instead of the usual brick-and-mortar extensions, homeowners are opting for light and modern glass extensions. We look at the new design trend and how KBSA member, EKCO Lifestyle, is excelling in demonstrating this luxurious home addition.

These extensions are typically made of high-quality glass panels that are reinforced with steel or aluminium frames for added strength and durability. Floor-to-ceiling windows, bi-fold doors, skylights, and orangeries can also achieve some of the benefits that glass extensions have to offer. Whether you want a bright and airy living room, a spacious dining room or a stunning kitchen, having a glass extension will create a more open and inviting living space.
Advances in glass technology offer excellent insulation properties, making it possible for larger expanses of glass and well-insulting frames to keep your new living space at a comfortable temperature all year round, without the worry of higher energy bills. Thermal heated glass and solar control glazing can be installed to achieve the temperature balance when there are variations in outdoor temperatures.
Often rear extensions can leave the centre of the house feeling dark, but with a glass extension, you can enjoy an abundance of natural light. Opening up your living space to build a greater connection to your outdoor spaces will not only leave your home feeling bigger and brighter, but uninterrupted views of the outdoors also help to improve your mood and well-being.
Further ways to transform your living space is to continue flagstones from your patio to your glass extension to create a seamless transition between the interior and exterior which works particularly well with glass-box kitchens. For properties wanting an outdoor kitchen, using similar materials to your indoor kitchen and installing the same height worktops indoors as well as outdoors make create an indoor-outdoor continuity.
EKCO Livingston have been designing and installing luxury kitchens, bathrooms, doors, windows, extensions and garden rooms for more than 20 years. They’ve also been successful in winning some of KBSA’s Awards including Best Kitchen Designer (under £25k), Young Designer of the Year and Bathroom Design, showcasing that they know what’s best in home designs.
Some of the glass extension work they have completed has given homeowners additional dining space as well as garden rooms, a stylish alternative to a summer house or conservatory. Some of their other projects include installing floor-to-ceiling bi-folding doors in kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms to achieve a greater connection to the outdoors.
EKCO believe that your home should be a reflection of your personality, so our team of experts will work with you every step of the way to create a space you’ll love. You can rest assured that quality is evident in everything they do, to deliver a project that will give your home the wow factor.
With summer coming up, a glass extension living space would become a popular place to spend time in to soak up all the sun. But you’ll also be able to enjoy your new extension all year round, from watching the first signs of spring starting to bud to watching flowers bloom to summer. You’ll be able to watch your garden transform from shades to greens to golds in autumn and stargaze on a clear winter’s night, with the added benefit of being able to watch the stars in the warmth.
If you’re considering getting a glass extension, here are some points to discuss with your architect:
- Will I need planning permission? Check with your local planning authority before starting any work
- Talk about how your privacy could be affected
- What do you want to achieve from your new living space?
- What drainage system will need to be installed?
